Three books to read before you die.
1984- G. Orwell
Great read and it will let you know many things about how control is handled.
The Catcher in the Rye- J.D. Salinger
As I'm a cynic, I love this book. If you have grown to loath people as much as me, you will enjoy this immensely.
Lucky- Alice Sebold
This is about a woman that gets raped. Her struggle will let you have a new outlook on violent sexual crime. It is from a woman's point of view, but, it's still a great read. Every man that commits sexual crimes should have to read this and have a test on the information in the book.

Check out the work of Ayn Rand;
We the Living - semi autobiographical, life in Soviet Russia after the revolution (it'll sound just like home).
The Fountainhead - the indomitable spirit vs. "each by his need".
Atlas Shrugged - she gets a bit wordy but the story reads like today's headlines and the book is over 75 years old. Her opus.
